In 1807, the Baltimore art collector Robert Gilmor, Jr. married into a prominent Charleston family. Sarah Reeve Ladson was the daughter of Major James and Judith Smith Ladson. She was considered one of the most beautiful and fashionable women of her time. She was the subject of several portraits and sculptures including a major work by Horatio Greenough also in the collection at the Gibbes.
