In June 1875 William Henry and Maria Mayers were wed in Dartford. William, who was born in 1849, was the son of William T. and Hannah Mayers of Chelsea. At that time William H. Mayers, then 22 years old was “Secretary [to a] Public Company” – a profession he followed for at least the next thirty years. The newly-married couple went to live at Clevedon Lodge, Thurlow Park Road, Dulwich. The 1881 census tells us that as well as William Henry and his wife Maria, there were two children – Ethel M. and Horace M. - and two servants (cook and housemaid). Ten years later the family had grown with the birth of a second son, Stanley R.
