This picture with inscriptions was created by Hirano Gogaku (1811-93), an active artist-monk in the 19th century. He was influenced by Tanomura Chikuden’s paintings, and also learned poetry from Hirose Tanso. After the Meiji period around 1868, he established his own method of landscape painting using dark ink and dry brush. Ultimately, he was praised as “The Three Perfections” — Calligraphy, Poetry and Painting. This painting is one of Gogaku’s later works, created in 1891, and exhibits his artistic accomplishments.
