Mt. Haguro is renowned for Shugendo, which is a religion that was born from the amalgamation of Ancient mountain worship and Buddhism.
"Shoreisai" is a festival of Shugendo, that takes place every New Year's Eve. This festival marks the end of the 100 days training for 2 elected Yamabushi each year. The 2 Yamabushi pray for bountiful harvest and prosperity for 100 days.
