Mud dwelling in Sa'ada governorate

In the northern areas of Yemen, where the dry plain meets the desert, the most important building material is mud. In this region, mud is mixed with straw in order to obtain rammed earth blocks, called zabur. It is applied on stone foundations (row by row) as a malleable mass that then dries during application.
