During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many Europeans moved to the Pittsburgh area looking for work in the mills. In particular, a large number of Eastern Europeans sought work in iron and steel. Many new immigrants could speak only limited English, if any at all, and worked in crews segregated by ethnicity and language. Signs such as this one, with a safety warning written in multiple languages, were common in iron and steel mills during this period.
