European artist Eva Schlegel’s public sculpture—her first in the United States—was a love letter to Oklahoma Contemporary’s new building and to Oklahoma City. Schlegel was intrigued by our building and the quality of light in Oklahoma City when she attended the opening of our inaugural exhibition, Bright Golden Haze, which included her large-scale photograph that captured the poetics of space.

Multiple Voices stood 16 feet high and 34 feet wide, featuring polished and translucent surfaces to catch and reflect the sharp light of Oklahoma’s open sky and the surrounding environment. The sculpture incorporated text from Oklahoma-connected writers: Steve Bellin-Oka, Kimberly Blaeser, and Joy Harjo. These poems appear blurred on glass panels, cryptic to the viewers but essential to the sculpture’s intent.
