Mummy Portrait of a Man

When Egypt was incorporated into the Roman Empire many Romans moved to the new province. Some became so “Egyptian” that they had their dead embalmed. They did not, however, adopt the Egyptian mummy mask, choosing to use in its place a painted portrait executed in the naturalistic style of their native country.
