Perseusbrunnen im Grottenhof, view to the west
In the Grotto Courtyard of the Residence stands the so-called Perseus Fountain.
It is modeled on the statue of Perseus in the Loggia dei Lanzi at the Piazza della Signoria in Florence, by Benvenuto Cellini.
Perseus holds up the severed head of Medusa, presenting his triumph over the serpent-headed Gorgon, whose deadly gaze he averted by a mirror trick.
The bowl fountain was created in 1585-1590 by Hubert Gerhard, based on a preliminary design by Friedrich Sustris.
