Grottenhof, to the west
Under William V, Frederick Sustris built the so-called Grottenhof, an inner garden in the Munich Residenz, in 1581-86. He designed one corner into an open grotto architecture, vaulted with a portico. From here one looks into the courtyard, in the center of which stands the Perseus Fountain (c. 1590); framed by brocaded putti with mythical animals (c. 1570/80). In 1944 the grotto hall collapsed and was rebuilt and decorated until 1958.
