Partial view from the north
This postcard from the beginning of the 20th century shows the rear view of the Wittelsbach Fountain against the backdrop of the old Maxburg Castle. From 1593 to 1597, Duke Wilhelm V had this city residence built, initially called the Wilhelminische Veste after him. It was given the name Herzog-Max-Burg (Maxburg for short) in the 17th century, when Duke Maximilian Phillipp resided there. When the Maxburg was almost completely destroyed in 1944, it was decided to rebuild it, integrating only the still intact tower.
