Late 5th - Early 4th century B.C.

Bologna, Italy

In contrast to the common image of women in ancient times as subservient to men, Etruscan women, particularly those of high rank, enjoyed significant freedom and autonomy. This funerary stele from Etruscan Bologna portrays a woman of the ruling class from the late 5th century BC, riding in a chariot drawn by winged horses towards an afterlife of salvation. The inscription on the monument reveals her name: Rakvi Satlnei.
