Bologna, Italy

In the Middle Ages and Renaissance, combs were luxurious items, often crafted from wood, bone, or ivory, and adorned with paint and gold. These combs featured two rows of teeth, one dense and one sparse. The central band was decorated with intricate patterns or bas-reliefs that told stories. Combs were frequently given by a groom to his bride-to-be or included in her dowry, symbolizing the transition to a new life.
