During the Renaissance, the emerging middle class sought to establish its own identity, emulating the customs of courts and aristocratic classes. This included the practice of exchanging precious gifts between betrothed couples as tokens of love. Often these were objects in brightly decorated ceramics like this dish. The decoration depicts a young woman in profile with a cartouche inscribed with the word "amor (love)" beside her.
