Bologna has a long tradition of crafting artisanal gelato machines. In 1913, Otello Cattabriga automated the method of separating and spreading the gelato preparation with a special sorbet maker. In 1945, Bruto Carpigiani perfected the method with a revolutionary "Autogelatiera": an innovative and completely enclosed machine that made Carpigiani, thanks to the commercial skills of his brother Poerio, a world leader in gelato production.
