During World War I, women took on a vital role in the workforce, filling the jobs of men sent to the front lines. Propaganda encouraged women to contribute both materially and morally. One postcard from the General Union of Italian Teachers for the War in Turin, called "The Decalogue of the Italian Woman During the War," urged women to "multiply your activities, at home and outside, to make yourself useful to the homeland with the work of your hands, with the ardor of your heart, with the light of your intelligence".
