Remington was the first real factory to manufacture typewriters efficiently in America. In 1867, Christopher Sholes, Carlos Glidden and Samuel Lewis invented another typewriter. The patent was sold to Densmore and Yost, who made a deal with E. Remington and Sons (already famous as a gun manufacturer), to market what was known as the Sholes and Glidden Type-Writer. Remington began production of the first typewriter on 1 March 1873 in Ilion, New York (the Ilion Arms Manufactory). In 1886, E. Remington and Sons sold its business to the Standard Typewriter Manufacturing Company, Inc. Included in the sale were the rights to use the Remington name and in 1902, Standard Typewriter changed its name to Remington Typewriter Company.
