The first music boxes appeared in the late 18th century, produced by artisan watchmakers familiar with the clockwork-like mechanisms that powered the song-playing contraptions. They came in various sizes, some small enough to carry in a pocket, others as big as a large piece of furniture. Music boxes served as a form of entertainment for people of all ages until the early 20th century, when louder, more melodious player pianos became popular.
