In the painting “Musical Society” we see Renieri’s daughters Lucretia, Klorinda and Angela. Music making in the family circle was a favourite pastime throughout Europe right up to the 19th century. In this painting we see the influence of Caravaggio – brightly lit faces and costume parts. On the dark background Renieri has used broad brush strokes to masterfully depict characteristic half figures and he has highlighted the large, plastic folds of the gowns, which was typical in Italian art of the time. Renieri’s daughters would often pose for their father and they can be seen in other works. Later they would become painters in their own right and helped their father in buying and selling paintings.
