One of the four Latin Fathers of the Church, Jerome is a popular figure in art with a variety of attributes. The manuscripts refer to his great scholarly contribution to the Church, his Latin translation of the Bible. His life as a hermit is indicated by the cave. The lion illustrates the legend that Jerome pulled a thorn from the paw of a lion who thereafter was his devoted companion.
