Fourth-generation Chinese American Kimberlee Bassford explores her family’s relationship to Honolulu Chinatown and the parallels between the COVID-19 pandemic and the 1899-1900 bubonic plague that hit Hawai‘i, highlighting the ways the two public health crises transformed the iconic neighborhood then and now.

Documentary filmmaker Kimberlee Bassford was born and raised in Honolulu and directs and produces films that spotlight stories of girls and women of color, gender equity, Asian American and Pacific Islander cultural identity, and mental health. Her films (WINNING GIRL, PATSY MINK: AHEAD OF THE MAJORITY and CHEERLEADER) have aired nationally on PBS and HBO and have screened in film festivals around the world.
