Originally, the work was a a full-body sculpture. Completed while Huang Ching-cheng was enrolled in the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, the model was his fianc?e, Li Guei-hsiang. Because it was wartime, only the statue's head was returned to Taiwan. In fashioning the young woman's features, the artist departed from rigidly realist techniques. The work is concise and well proportioned, expressing light, shadow, and three-dimensionality without overworking the piece. The face is gentle and serene, projecting a youthful aura.
