Método para arranque e deslocamento

José Damasceno’s installations and sculptures are generally built out of commonplace elements in opposition to classical sculpture, though on some occasions he makes use of materials from sculptural tradition. His work involves an interesting interplay between representation and abstraction, between the classical and the trivial. In "Método para arranque e deslocamento" the artist uses a sort of carpet commonly used in household and office environments, but which through the actions of cutting and removal, takes on a new meaning. The cuts transform the space which was previously flat, as parts of the carpet are pulled up to construct new elements. Damasceno creates movement, depth and volume. The plane gains the quality of three-dimensional space and is converted into a sculpture.
