Contemporary Multiple Molela Plaques

Using the traditionally inherited technique of creating deep, hollow figurative relief plaques of deities, Khemraj, the renowned Molela potter created, in 1980's a large wall panel combining dozens of square plaques of 1' x 1' depicting the theme of how expansion of cities engulf villages. The theme is articulated by showing urban images of motor cars, railway trains, steamers and water-pumps taking over the rural landscape and the images of traditional lifestyle such as bullock carts, women grinding, well scenes, etc. receding in to the background.

Such works evidence the potter's desire to expand the field of their creative expression beyond the inherited tradition.
