Celebrated as one of the 'Nine Masters' to be treated as a treasure, Jamini Roy, a student of the Bengal School, was a versatile experimental artist. Jamini Roy's search for authentic Indian art led him to the folk-art traditions of Kalighat and Bengali scroll paintings. First, he experimented with monochromatic works. Then he used natural Indian colours to create simple yet striking images of rural scenes, women and mythological stories. The figure of Jesus Christ was also a subject that he often painted. Jamini Roy was probably the first artist to depict Christ in an Indian style. Google India dedicated a Google Doodle to celebrate Roy on his 130th birthday on 11 April 2017.
