Rudi van Dantzig made his choreographic debut in 1955, with 'Nachteiland' which was commissioned by Sonia Gaskell for her Nederlands Ballet. He was inspired for this work after watching a performance by Martha Graham. This ballet reveals a psychodrama for the inner struggle of an individual.

The human, his inner self, and his desires were performed by the Nederlands Danstheater through the persons of: Rudi van Dantzig, Alexandra Radius, Han Ebbelaar, and Hannie van Leeuwen.
