Naked Woman on a Mound

Rembrandtca. 1631

Rijksmuseum

Rijksmuseum
Amsterdam, Netherlands

The pose of this woman seated on a mound with her clothing piled next to her corresponds to that seen among Old Testament and mythological bathers, such as Susanna, Bathsheba or Diana. Yet Rembrandt gives nary a clue that would help identify her. He sketches directly from life and is clearly not aiming for a rendering of an idealized female body. She gazes out at us very directly.
