This sacred site was established by the Taino (first inhabitants of Jamaica) likely due to the views of numerous peaks all around. It served as the military and spiritual capital of the Windward Maroons for most of the Maroon War. It was almost invincible as it is accessible only by a treacherous climb on one side and surrounded on two sides by precipices and the other by steep slopes reaching higher up the mountains.
