The miniature image of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769–1821) created after the oil portrait by Horace Vernet (1789–1863) has been painted on ivory using watercolours and is placed in an ornamental bone frame. This shape of frame was popular in the first half of the 19th century: the miniature portrait could have been hung on a wall or, placed in a special stand, displayed on a mantelpiece or commode.
