Napoleon Injured at Regensburg

François GEORGIN and PELLERIN19th century

Musée Bertrand
Châteauroux, France

The battles between the Grande Army and the Austrian troops in Bavaria during the month of April 1809 are considered by historians to be the most impressive demonstrations of Napoleon's military capabilities.
The battle of Regensburg, which Georgin and Pellerin chose to represent, is one of the battles that helps the Grand Army win victory over Austria. This is also the episode they chose to illustrate once again the attachment of French soldiers to the Emperor.
Slightly injured in the heel during the assault, rumor spread through the ranks that Napoleon was seriously injured. In order to refute this rumor and to restore strength to the troops, he decides to get back on his horse, foot bandaged, and cross the evidently adoring crowd.
