Napoleon's Funeral Chariot

PELLERIN19th century

Musée Bertrand
Châteauroux, France

This print offers us an illustration of the famous chariot transporting the remains of Napoleon to Paris during the Return of the Ashes in 1840.
Twelve victories lift the Emperor's coffin which rests atop a shield.
The pedestal of the twelve caryatids is surrounded by four bundles of weapons and decorated with purple draperies with motifs of bees, eagles, laurel wreaths, Napoleon's N (the imperial N), and is carried by four wheels. Nearly everything is golden.
Flags and trophies are added at the rear, while the chariot is pulled by 16 black horses arranged in four quadrigas.
Pellerin gives a detailed description of this chariot in his commentary.
