Napoleon's Funeral Convoy

Put into action on May 8, 1821 in Saint Helena, Napoleon was brought to his first tomb by his few allies. He wanted to rest on the banks of the River Seine in Paris, however his wish was not granted until 1840, when his ashes were returned.
The scene depicts an arid, dry valley, with only a few members of the Emperor's much more imposing procession.
Rather than the coffin which shelters Napoleon's remains, it is the tomb that is the main subject of the print; it's about emphasizing the pathos of the scene.
