French cabin boy Narcisse Pelletier was shipwrecked off the coast of Queensland Australia, then rescued and adopted by a First Nations family, before being ‘rescued’ again by European sailors 17 years later.
When found, Pelletier had markings across his chest and arms (cicatrices). When rescued, he'd been taken to a family of Uutaalnganu speakers, the Sandbeach People. Renamed ‘Anco’ or ‘Amglo’, Pelletier he was initiated into their traditional lifestyle and marked with scars over his chest.
Late he stated that "the sailors laboured under a misconception, and that neither did the natives wish him to go, nor did he himself wish to leave".
