This dramatic illustration by Thomas Nast appeared in Harper's Weekly magazine on September 2, 1876, as part of a series of illustrations that Nast had created in the aftermath of the Hamburg Massacre which had taken place in Hamburg, South Carolina in July 1876. The caption asks, "Is this a Republican form of government? Is this protecting life, liberty or property? Is this the equal protection of the laws?"
