Late Tuesday night, thousands of Illinois National Guardsmen relieved a weary troop of Chicago police officers. Here the guardsmen stand near the Conrad Hilton Hotel, where hundreds of delegates stayed. Soldiers and policemen symbolized Mayor Daley's efforts to control dissent.
