NUWSS rally, London, July 1910. The banners identify the women as having travelled to London from the North West of England to take part in a rally at Trafalgar Square on Sat 9 July 1910. The rally was organised by the London Society of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies in support of the Conciliation Bill being discussed in Parliament that would have given some women the right to vote. The wording on many of the banners refers to the Voters' petitions in support of female suffrage, totalling 280 000 signatures collected during the general election of 1910 in over 290 constituencies. Interestingly in the centre of the image is a sandwich board man advertising an anti-suffrage 'protest' meeting against Votes for Women to take place in London on Monday 11th July.
