The Nautilus cup is made from the shell of a cephalopod (Nautilidae). The cup once belonged to Prince Charles I of Mecklenburg (1540-1610). The detailed and naturalistic decoration, the lizard and the eagle’s claw, indicates that it was inspired by the greatest goldsmith of the age, Wenzel Jamnitzer (1507/8-1585).
Probably Central European origin.
