Taranto, Italy

The navicella (boat-shaped) earring epitomises the intricate workmanship of the goldsmiths of Taranto. The minute details of the phytomorphic (plant-like) decoration are obtained by means of filigree and granulation. Parallels can be found in the north-eastern part of the Hellenic world, particularly in Macedonia. Examined in detail, the navicella is surmounted by plant elements and decorated on the sides with Nikai (winged female figures) and small doves and amphora pendants hanging from small chains, while below there are gold wires with rosettes.
