National Railway Museum
York, United Kingdom

Taken from British Transport Commission collection of photographs. Navvies at Hammersmith station, about 1904. The navvies are probably building the Piccadilly Underground line, which linked Hammersmith to Finsbury Park. The line opened in 1906.

Hammersmith got its first station in 1864, on the Underground Metropolitan Railway. It also had links to London & South Western Railway lines. Today Hammersmith station links to the District, Hammersmith and City, and Piccadilly lines.
