Necklace & Pendant

National Museums of Kenya

National Museums of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya

Necklace made of coloured beads(red, white, dark and light blue), white conus shells and a metallic pendant on the front made by young bachelors. The conus shell were collected by the kamba's from their escapades at the coast. They used to carry gourds with milk and millet to sustain then on their long walk. The shells are smoothen by grinding them on a stone with water and take about four hours to complete the process. Nothing abrasive is used because the shells are fragile and crack easily.
