Pearl necklaces were very popular jewellery in the Early Middle Ages. They were made of precious metals, which were said to be imbued with special characteristics. Beads of amber, rock crystal (1) or glass showed the wealth of the wearer. The Franks continued the art of glass bead making according to the Roman tradition and sold the luxury goods in the north.
