Marcasite is a name commonly used in jewellery for the mineral pyrite (also known as iron-pyrites). The faceted stones simulate the sparkle of diamonds, and the effect can be similar to that of cut steel. The silver plating on the back of this necklace has worn thin and the copper base metal is visible.
