Museo Sefardí
Toledo, Spain

Jewish-Berber necklace made up of three large ovoid pieces decorated with enamelled geometric motifs. Beads of silver, glass, coral and bone are strung between them.

This necklace was used by the Sephardic bride in the “cloth ceremony” prior to the wedding.
Jewels indicate the status, social position and tribe of the woman who wears them. The reason for their use, in addition to beautification, is their function as a talisman, protecting the woman from the dangers that threaten her; Berber beliefs are based on superstition. Jewels for Berber women constitute their main heritage.
