Negligee and black velvet jacket

Chester Beatty
Dublin, Ireland

In the nineteen-teens, outfits worn in private were looser and less formal than those worn in public, but no less fashionable. The dressing gown shown here, made of muslin with a fur trim, is worn with a small, crushed black velvet jacket. It was worn in the home, but only among a woman’s immediate family and household staff.
