In 1995 Belgian designer Raf Simons launched his eponymous men’s collection, presenting a radically different image of masculinity, which would become highly influential in the men’s wear of that decade. This look, with woolen slim-fitting trousers worn under a waistcoat in blue neoprene (Autumn/Winter 2009-2010), shows Simons’s predilection for experimenting with new materials. Neoprene, a family of synthetic rubbers, is rapidly becoming popular among more and more contemporary designers. Many Belgian designers enjoy experimenting with these new materials, coatings and rubber applications.
