The upper pitcher rim of Nepenthes is known as the peristome. It is a key trapping feature of the pitcher plant. When wetted, the peristome becomes highly slippery causing insects to slip into the pitcher plant where thye are then broken down within a pool of digestive juices, releasing nutrients for the plant.
