Neptune mosaic

ca. 135 - 145 AD

Conjunto Arqueológico de Itálica

Conjunto Arqueológico de Itálica
Santiponce, Spain

This mosaic gives its name to a large building, partially excavated in 1973 by José Maria Luzon.

It has a border with mocking scenes of life of pygmies, mounted on and hunting herons, fishing and also hunting crocodiles. In the central L-shaped carpet a marine procession (thiasos) appears with god Neptune driving a chariot drawn by seahorses in the center. Around him are represented various sea monsters (two ichtyocentauros and various sea creatures with goat, panther, horse, wolf and goat heads), then fish, dolphins, crustaceans and molluscs.

Its marine theme and the proximity of heating structures (hypocaustum) have been used to identify it as the paving of a private bathroom (balneum).
