The author, Conrad Hagger (1666 – 1747), spent the last 27 years of his life as cook to the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. He learned his trade in the kitchens of the Prince-Abbot of St Gallen, the Counts of Latour, at the Court of the Bavarian Electorate and at the Court of the Bishopric of Chiemsee.
Over 300 illustrations of cakes, pastries, serving and decoration variations and table pieces give a good impression of the prestigious baroque way of life. An extensive index of over 33 pages at the end of the work presents an excellent picture of – haute – cuisine at the beginning of the 18th century, while the reading of the recipes is itself a culinary delight.
