Ferns and horsetails are the most primitive plants on the planet. As such, they grow and reproduce slowly. While they are still living today, they lost their place as the most dominant plants on Earth to plants such as flowers and broad-leaved trees, which grow and reproduce over a much shorter perioid of time.
