There are few gadgets as essential to safe cycling as a set of bicycle lights, especially as the seasons change and the days shorten. Many jurisdictions require one or more bicycle lights to be fitted to bicycles ridden at night — generally a white light in the front and a red light in the back.
The lighting mediums used with bicycle lamps between 1870s and the late 1930s included oil, candle, acetylene gas and electricity. The lamps themselves were often made of brass. Richmond stores retailed both English- and American-made lanterns during the late-19th century.
